Within the European aerospace industry there are many standards used to specify and to control the quality of paint finishes. There are mainly either European national standards, European Company standards or US specifications. There has been an initiative by the industry to try to rationalize the complex specification situation within Europe. A new working system, using mainly electronic communication, has been set up by AECMA-STAN (AECMA is the European Association of Aerospace Industries) to try to speed up the process of publication of EN standards. An aspect that effects the ability to create international standard is the availability of people and financial support from industry to do the work required. In the area of aerospace paint material standards there are, at the moment no applicable ISO standards available. The American SAE standards are a possibility but in the field of aerospace paints European requirements are often not catered for and company in-house specifications do not normally cater for the wider interest. Another problem which exists is that different users have different requirements for the same product, for example in the case of chromate primer. For corrosion testing, existing standards can often be used. At the time of the development of two component epoxy and polyurethane coatings for aerospace there was the establishment of new higher standards for testing the corrosion resistance. Because of the main task for the immediate future is to complete a large number of existing drafts, in different stages of completion, work has been done to classify them into priority.
