(Fortsetzung aus Heft 36(2002)) The more significant logistical impacts foreseen by hybrid-electric technology will be in the areas of configuration management, operating cycles, component standardization, maintenance planning and inventor management. Logistics support will necessarily be governed and managed by the 'low density' inventory concept. A low density vehicle fleet encompasses a multiplicity of individual models, each with a low population and unique configuration and logistics attributes, but which does not benefit from the economy of scale afforded by large fleets of vehicles with similar specifications and missions. In the paper, the battery issue is addressed first. It is noted, that , inasmuch as the M113 hybrid-electric TTD is a developmental prototype the documentation related to the aforementioned logistics engineering disciplines is likewise in the development phase. The discussion therefore necessarily makes certain assumptions and postulates the logistics attribute of the M113 hybrid in terms of the experiential output and observations derived from data provided by the TTD test profile. Hybrid-electric propulsion technology demands collaboration and coordination between logistics engineering and design engineering. Approximately 65 % of system life cycle costs are incurred after deployment or market introduction, and 85 % of the life cycle costs are determined by the end of the development phase. It is therefore incumbent upon the logistician to be involved in the early phases of development so as to influence system design and ensure optimum reliability, maintanability and cost-effective life cycle supportability.
