It is recognised at international level that high strength steel associated to high pressure is the best solution for long distances natural gas transportation. On the base of these considerations, Eni group sponsored on 1997 a research program (3-4 years long) with the aim of investigating on the possible use of X100 steel for long distances high pressure pipelines construction. In order to verify the feasibility of such a project an item of paramount importance is field weldability both from the structural and economic point of view. For this purpose Snam Rete Gas, on behalf of Eni group, decided to start an activity aimed to explore this issue testing X100 pipes (56''19 mm and 36 ''16 mm). In this paper are explained general results obtained during the weldability program in terms of: Definition of minimum pre-heating temperature in order to avoid cold cracking problems by means of laboratory tests (Implant and Tekken). Execution on X100 pipes (56''19 mm and 36'' 16 mm) of girth weld joints by means of manual (SMAW) and mechanised (GMAW) technique.
