Elastic rubber couplings are used in diesel locomotives on engine shafts to avoid vibrations in the drive systems. The hydrokinetic torque converter and the diesel engine of a power unit in a shunting locomotive were joined with an elastic cord-reinforced rubber coupling (580 mm x 130 mm x 16 mm). Net torques on the shafts and on the coupling were determined by electrotensometry using a measuring system consisting of tensoresistors, tensoamplifiers, an oscillograph and galvanometers. Two load maxima were observed on the shafts and the rubber coupling during the start-up and stop of the engine at 400/min and 650/min and at 300/min and 600/min, respectively. Substantial dynamic loads were observed on the coupling at high rotational speed (1200/min to 1400/min).
