An 80 kWp photovoltaic system based on multicrystalline PV modules has been integrated in the coverage structure of the new area of the airport in Bologna, Italy. This is the largest to date grid connected system in Italy. The system is connected to the 20kV grid owned by Enel through two IGBT driven inverters and an output transformer. Preliminary data, based on the average insolation in Bologna, indicated the system capable of generating 83500 kWh/year, which would provide about 75% of the power requirements of the illuminated coverage area. In reality, the power output after 220 days is such that, extrapolated, a 93.500 kWh production can be foreseen, which increases the share to 81%. The system therefore contributes, even if indirectly, to rationalise the power consumption of the airport infrastructure. The initiative is based on the growing awareness of the importance of renewable energies in many different areas, and witnesses the level of commitment of different kinds of organisations. Th modules used for the application are about 1150, with an average unit output of 70Wp, and are fixed to the airport coverage by a metallic structure which helps cooling by natural ventilation and makes the system visible from the ground level. By the time of the conference, sufficient data will be available to report on the performance of the system, and on the reduced emissions in terms of CO2, which is preliminarily evaluated to be about 70 ton/year, corresponding to more than 17 ton/year of fossil fuel.
