The potential of electromagnetic actuators for applications with a required displacement of 1 - 3 mm and forces between 5 - 60 N is analysed first. After function fulfilment and reliability the mass of the actuator is the third most important criteria for space applications and leads to miniaturisation. Therefore the use of permanent magnetic materials as well as different working principles of bipolar magnets were investigated. A prototype of such a miniaturized bipolar actuator for locking of scientific instruments on satellites is presented, which shows a very good force to weight ratio and needs only power during switching between the two stable rest positions.
