Applications in the area of environmental sensing were grouped by so called ADAS - Advanced Driver Assistant Systems. Mainly based on sensor technologies of image processing, Lidar and Radar the observation of lane and surrounding traffic has reached a level applying it to vehicle features reducing workload of driver and increasing safety. Lane observation is mainly done by lane tracking systems based on image processing of black/white cameras. Lane observation offers data of lane geometry, lane attributes and lane condition for several ADAS functions. ADAS function using lane data are Lane Departure Warning (mainly), Lane Change Support, Speed recommendation and ADAS with active lateral control like Lane Keeping and ACC Stop&Go + Lateral Control. Functional descriptions are given together with aspects flowing borders of comfort and safety systems. Legal aspects are critical especially for active controlled and safety systems for introduction to the car market. Lane Tracker Systems have to be extremely flexible to a broad variety of situations and surrounding conditions. Furthermore they have to show high stability to be used for safety functions. LTS data will be fused with data of digital maps, traffic data and other sensors to enhance lane observation in future systems. Due to increasing performance of the next generation cameras combined with available low cost computer power for advanced algorithms these kind of sensors will gain high importance for future automobile applications. Future trend of ADAS will be heading to pure safety functions with more advanced sensors and more complex signal processing. Starting from the transparent scenarios of motorways complex situations like in urban areas are the aim to be understood and controlled by the surround view of ADAS systems. But an enhanced collision avoidance will keep a vision for the next future.
