A composite propellant with a remarkably high burning rate has been prepared. The propellant is based on ultra-fine ammonium perchlorate (UFAP) with a particle size of around 1 micron. The binder consists of equal amounts of polydimethylsiloxane elastomer and n-hexylcarborane (NHC). In the pressure region 4 to 16 MPa, the burning rate was in the order of meters per second. The pressure exponent was close to 1. The propellant is chemically stable and can be handled and stored as ordinary HTPB/AP propellants. Thermochemical calculations show performance similar to ordinary gun propellants. For a gun loading of 200 kg/m3, an impetus of 1013 J/g, a flame temperature of 2890 K and an average molecular weight of 23.7 g/mol for the reaction products were obtained. Drawbacks of the propellant are low mechanical strength due to high amounts of NHC and high price.
