Elastic Memory Composite (EMC) materials can accommodate very high packaging strains without damage and have significant potential for application to deployable space structures that rely on stored strain energy for deployment. The key difference between EMC materials and traditional carbon-fiber-reinforced composites is a shape memory polymer matrix, which has a high elastic-strain capacity and the ability to "freeze" strain when subjected to a specific thermo-mechanical cycle. The ability to internally contain strain energy provides an advantage over traditional high-strain materials (e.g., S2-glass/epoxy). The present paper presents analytical and experimental results from a program to develop carbon-fiber-reinforced EMC coilable longerons for the CoilABLE(trademark) boom. Specifically, the paper presents: 1) design trade studies that describe the benefits of EMC longerons, 2) analyses of the packaging and deployment behavior of EMC longerons, and 3) results from testing of prototype EMC longerons.
