The footprint, or contact patch, of a tire is an important component in tire performance. Simply defined, the tire footprint is the area of tire tread that contacts the ground. The larger the footprint, the more contact with the ground, the better the tire performs. Tire construction is a key to the size of the footprint. With radial tires, the sidewall deflects and lays more of the tire on the ground. This, in turn, creates a larger footprint (more square inches on the ground) and spreads the weight of the vehicle over a wider area for better flotation and traction. For heavy-equipment operations in rugged industries such as mining, construction, concrete, logging and other off-road applications Michelin recently introduced the following tires: (1) X-Quarry for rigid dump trucks, (2) X-Haul provides excellent protection and long wear for haul trucks and (3) X-Mine tire provides outstanding protection against punctures and cuts for loaders, underground scoops, haulers and other heavy equipment working in severe hard rock quarries, underground mines, scrap and solid waste applications.
