Ballistic performance of fiber-reinforced composites with different fabric structures and configurations was studied. Composites with Kevlar-KM2 ripstop fabric performed better against smaller size projectiles due to the effective fiber failure through constraining of the fibers, while hybrid composites constructed from ripstop fabric of Kevlar-KM2 and Spectra-1000 show an advantage with larger projectiles due to the effective strain energy absorption. Hybrid composite configuration of these two structures exhibited overall performance improvement. For composites with polysulfone resin matrix, processing temperature was the most significant parameter influencing composite properties under ballistic impact. However, the Spectra polyethylene containing composites did not show significant differences on ballistic performances as a result of processing temperature. In the conditions used in this study, the influence of processing pressures was negligible. Microscopic examination of the ballistically irnpacted composites reveals that low temperature processed samples show more fiber fibrillation and straining in the vicinity of the impact point and more delamination accompanied by fiber straining. However higher temperature processed samples show localized damage with brittle failure and shear cut of the fiber at the impact region resulting in significantly reduced ballistic impact energy absorption. Fabric configuration was also an important parameter influencing the ballistic performance. Relatively stiff composites, KKM2/PSU ripstop, showed better performance with smaller fragments over KM2/SP ripstop composites. However, KM2/SP ripstop composites, which are less stiff than KKM2/PSU 6-2 ripstop composites, exhibited better performance with larger size fragment (64-grain FSP).
