Comprehensive tests and analyses have shown that in-depth examination and consistent optimization of all materials used are essential if film capacitors are to withstand the extreme conditions of automotive applications. EPCOS has recently devoted considerable expense to examining and defining design fundamentals, and can now offer film capacitors with the highest resistance to vibrations, temperature and temperature reversal. Unboxed stacked film capacitors (silver types) with PEN dielectrics, now being used in igniters of HID car headlight systems, demonstrate the extraordinary potential of this material and reliability of design at temperatures up to 170 deg C, pulse currents up to 700 A and charging voltages of more than 1000 V. In other automotive applications, boxed or powder-dipped PET capacitors are the best choice, but special care has to be taken in optimizing terminal configuration, production parameters, resin composition and box material. Surface mount versions of film capacitors are particularly suitable for automotive applications because the dielectrics (PET, PEN, PPS) and production processes selected are specially designed to withstand the high temperature stress of reflow soldering. This trend is confirmed by the growing number of customer requests for SMDs and will continue to shape the future of automotive film capacitors.
