In the future, ultra low emission vehicles and zero emission vehicles will partake in reducing the pollution of the big cities and special areas like California by exhaust gases. This will be achieved by using methane from natural gas as a fuel for busses, taxis and cars or using hydrogen in fuel cell vehicles. At standard pressure and temperature both fuels are gases. When storing them in mobile tanks they must be liquefied at low temperatures or compressed at high pressures of up to 70 MPa. High pressure storage at low weight requires new materials like carbon fiber reinforced tank walls. In this case, high tech third-party inspections for system approval, online monitoring on board, and qualified periodical inspections will be ensuring a high safety level at all situations. The paper describes this kind of safety philosophy and the necessary tests.
