The forming process of glass from a two-dimensional sheet to a three-dimensional complex surface results in a net change of surface area between the two states. This change induces deformations (strains) that generally cause optical distortions of unacceptable refractive and reflective quality on the final shape of the glass surface. This paper discusses in depth the process by which these deformations are initiated and how they affect the optical quality of the resulting surface. The understanding of these deformations is critically important, it can be used as a tool for modifying an initial design that clearly shows expected formability problems. These problems, if not corrected, will occur later on during the development of the forming process, and design modification options may be considerably more constrained at later stages of development.
