ESA's CryoSat satellite will fly in a non sun-synchronous near polar orbit with an inclination of 92 deg of angle at 720 km average altitude. The resulting major design drivers for the EPS have been the orbit with its varying local hours, the required lifetime of 3.5 years. The core of the Electrical Power System (EPS) is the Power Control and Distribution Unit (PCDU) with a Sequential Switching Shunt Regulator (SIR), operating on an unregulated power bus. The energy is provided by a body-mounted Solar Array consisting of 2 panels, covered with Triple Junction GaAs solar cells. Energy is stored in the 66 Ah battery consisting of an array of 1,5 Ah LiIon cells.
