Very often, the level and quality of vehicle interior noise are dominated by structure-borne noise originating from the powertrain and transferred via the chassis structure. For an efficient control of this kind of noise phenomenon, a quick and reliable analysis of the transfer paths is desirable. Therefore, a new APT (active path tracking) method has been developed which is based on a novel adaptation of active noise cancellation algorithms for identifying all relevant sources and transmission paths of powertrain induced noise up to 800 Hz. The method is able to identify the vibration transfer paths without extensive vehicle dismantling, that is removal of the powertrain is not required. All connection points between powertrain and chassis such as engine and gearbox mounts, exhaust hangers and wheel suspensions can be taken into consideration as potential transfer paths. Finally, the method gives the possibility for the immediate verification of the analysis results by active vibration cancellation procedures.
