A new type of bake-hardenable high strength steel was developed and various properties required for application to car body parts were investigated, with the following conclusions: BH-Y of approximately 80 MPa and BH-T of approximately 60 MPa were obtained with the developed steel by paint baking after deformation at a strain rate of more than 10 %. The developed steel shows good formability, equal to that of conventional steel of the same TS grade. The measured fatigue limit of the developed steel was increased significantly by strain age hardening. The dynamic absorbed energy of the developed steel was increased by strain age hardening, corresponding to an increase in tensile strength of approximately 60 MPa. Changes in the mechanical properties of the developed steel during room temperature aging were very small. Crashworthiness, as evaluated using a hat-shaped square column simulating car body parts, was improved, corresponding to an increase in tensile strength of 60 MPa or a reduction in sheet thickness of 0.1 mm.
