A traction test machine, developed for evaluation of t-CVT traction fluids for the automotive consortium, USCAR, provides precision traction measurements to stresses over 4 GPa. The high stress machine, WAMhs, provides point and elliptical contacts with ball or roller specimens contacting flat disc specimens. Machine stiffness and positioning technology offer control of linear slip, sideslip and spin. Traction measurements can be made at surface speeds from zero to over 10 m/sec and temperatures from -40 deg C to 140 deg C. The machine with its custom software allows flexibility to conduct traction fluid testing and tribology testing for surface durability. A USCAR test protocol for traction fluid characterization covers a test matrix of approximately 160 data sets. Tests with a reference fluid show the effect of slip, temperature, stress and spin on traction coefficient. Follow-on tests with three reference fluids are to provide a baseline for traction fluid development and qualification. The purpose of the USCAR machine and test method is to encourage traction fluid development.
