Oxidation of GRCop-84 (Cu-8Cr-4Nb), NARloy-Z (Cu-3Ag-0.5Zr), and Cu in O2 was studied and compared from 500 to 900 deg C. (GRCop-84 and NARloy-Z are Cu alloys of interest as liners for the combustion chambers of regeneratively cooled rocket engines, such as second-generation reusable launch vehicles.) NARloy-Z and Cu oxidized at the same rates at all temperatures, but the GRCop-84 oxidation rate varied with temperature regime and duration of oxidation: its rate was comparable to that of Cu or NARloy-Z above about 700 deg C but an order of magnitude lower than that of NARloy-Z or Cu at lower temperatures. These differences and the bifurcation of CRCop-84 oxidation kinetics into two branches at high temperatures are discussed in terms of oxide scale morphologies.
