A new automotive LED lamp was developed which is characterized in having a plurality of reflecting surfaces placed around a single LED to increase the effective use of luminous flux, thereby realizing a lamp of a large light-emitting surface with a small depth. Using this technique, it will be possible to design any of various types of automotive signal lamp (tail lamp, stop lamp, or turn signal lamp) that functions satisfactorily by using a relatively small number of LEDs. An LED automotive combination tail-stop lamp is developed which could meet the European photometric requirements using only three LEDs. The new types of LED lamp can emit luminous flux approximately 6.4 times the conventional values by increasing the rate of effective use of luminous flux, and increasing electric current. If the luminous flux emanating from one LED is further improved in the future, it may become possible that single-LED lamps can replace any of conventional incandescent-bulb lamps.
