Up to the present time bulbs as light sources for rear lamps have been state of the art. Their technical features lead to restricted possibilities of the functional pictures because legal requirements have to be met. Using LEDs for the essential red and amber signal functions the technical and legal demands can be realized differently by various functional pictures. Therefore brand new styling possibilities are feasible. This will be explained in the following study where only light emitting functions are considered. The optical impression of the reflex can not be influenced because it is a passive function. In principle there are two different design concepts. Concept 1: Red functions are combined in one area. The white and yellow functions are positioned outside the red field. Concept 2: Separation of the red function by white and yellow functions. Concept 1 needs a relatively large area considering the legal requirements. Therefore most often concept 2 is used for compact lamps. The below described functionalities are only feasible using LEDs. Dual function red/amber in cavity 1. A color switching is possible without a noticeable break or a color mixture due to the fast response of the LEDs. Different signal pictures are available by a digital control 01 the LEDs. A red outer lens for the yellow function is feasible using monochromatic light sources such as LEDs. With bulbs this is only possible through color mixture (spectral filter behind the lens). The use of two bulbs in one cavity (for two different functions) would cause thermal problems. Fast response in comparison to a bulb (stop light). Until the present time a differentiation between various car models by night was almost impossible. For example the combined function of the taillight and the turn signal in different colors using the same cavity creates a completely new impression. Intelligent controlled LEDs helps the stylist to create unique rear lamps underlining the character of his model.
