A variety of new discharge light sources for automotive application has been introduced within the last years. These products demonstrate the great flexibility of this type of light sources. Unlike incandescent lamps, they cover a much wider range of application specific requirements. Discharge lamps can be designed as a point like source with dimensions of a few mm and luminance of up to several kcd/cm2 as well as flat shape light sources with dimensions in the dm-range. Lamp shape, run-up time and light color are adjustable to the benefit of the application. Further fundamental advantages are high efficiency and long life time. The properties of discharge lamps very much depend on the way they are electrically driven. Every discharge lamp type has its own special driving requirements making circuit design for lamp ballast more and more a task tightly connected with lamp development. Two new light sources will be introduced and the driving characteristics of those lamps will be outlined in this paper. The high color lamp (D-HC), with metal halide composition in the burner, could achieve light with higher blue content than it is created in normal D1 or D2 lamp. The D-HC lamp is a 35 W Xenon HID lamp with igniter circuit integrated in the lamp socket and is designed for fast run-up. In comparison luminous flux is little less but more stable over life time. The Linex Lamp had been introduced for display back-lighting. Fiber optics with Linex edge-light can be used to illuminate displays up to a screen diagonal of 10 inches. It also is used in office automation applications like copying machines and scanners. The Linex lamp is a 8 - 10 mm diameter tube with a length of typically 10-40 cm. The length can be chosen to meet application specific requirements. The Linex lamp is an excimer lamp and UV light is created by recombination of Xenon excited states.
