Amber colored signal bulbs have become very popular due to styling aspects during the recent years. In the beginning these bulbs were made out of colored glass, which was later on eliminated out of environmental reasons. Today most of the amber bulbs are coated with an absorbing filter on lacquer basis. However there are limitations regarding color stability under certain environmental conditions like temperature and humidity with this kind of coating. On the other hand the yellowish appearance in the luminaire in the non-operating condition is not liked very much due to styling aspects. Interference coatings can address both concerns. Interference coatings on signalling bulbs in automotive lighting are able to create colours like amber and red acording to the legal requiremants of ECE regulation 37. With all the properties described in this paper, interference coatings on bulbs like DIADEM (R) are a way to avoid hazardous materials like Cadmium in creating signalling colours, to give the stylists the desired neutral appearance and are suitable to provide these signalling colours with nearly constant performance over a lang lifetime.
