Due to improvements in plastic materials and to the development of flexible software the designer are able to introduce innovative optical systems like Total Internal Reflectors (TIR). These are transparent segmented devices made in plastic material, able to collect and to spread the light in order to obtain the required intensity pattern. The TIR clear reflectors, calculated by a software based on an inverse ray tracing algorithm, have proved to be efficient and able to create homogenous intensity patterns.They are an excellent solution for rear lamp design, introducing an innovative style that can satisfy the continuous research in automotive design. Besides a reduction of costs is allowed thank to the lack of lacquering and aluminized processes. A next aspect to investigate, is the possibility to create standard TIR reflectors for any rear lamp functions usable with appropriate arrangements for various car models. In this way an appreciable further reduction of costs would be possible.
