In recent years, as automobile designs have become more diverse, the shapes of headlamps have also changed and novel designs have become popular. However, if these new types of headlamps are designed using conventional methods, it is hard to make them satisfy basic headlamp performance requirements, and thus it has been considered difficult to provide both novelty of design and adequate safety in the same lamp. Earlyer it has bee reported on the development of an ultra-thin 'Line-Beam Headlamp' with good responses. Therefore it was sought to evolve this technology further and has succeeded in developing a 'Vertical Shape Line-Beam Headlamp' (VSLBH) that satisfies the demand. The targets were to design a surface of 40 mm wide and that the illumination performance should be as good as or better than a conventional headlamp. An illumination simulation was developed to facilitate development of a new lamp shape. The VSLBH consists roughly ot three 'invisible light conduits.' Expanding on this definition, a passage that reaches the lens surface with a single reflection can also be defined as a type of 'invisible light conduit.' The horizontal 'Line-Beam Headlamp' that was reported two years ago is configured from two multiple reflection light conduits and two single reflection light conduits, for a total of four. It can be expected that use of the multiple reflection concept will tacilitate the innovative development of more freely designed headlamps that are nonetheless bright. This paper demonstrates that it is also possible to bring forth an effective beam from a gap located at a point distant from the light source in the vertical dimension. With the structure described herein, the light emission window of the lens surface can be divided into several areas, and routes for directing the light in each area (light conduits) can be rationally constructed.
