The Low-Noise-Technology (LNT) combines freight vehicle and track measures to reduce railway noise. A study has been carried out for DB AG in order to investigate if the LNT can play a major role in future noise-abatement policies for new and upgraded lines instead of building high barriers or walls next to the lines. The noise emission and reception on two lines with a total length of 190 km have been acoustically calculated for the conventional method and the LNT. Applying the LNT the amount of required insulated windows as a measure of the degree of noise reception levels outside the houses reduces to between 39 % and 4 % compared with conventional actions although barriers up to 5.6 m high have been assumed hence the LNT is providing a by far better noise protection. The investments and costs for the two lines have been extrapolated to the concerning 3700 km part of the German railway network. The LNT can save infrastructure investments of about 738 million Euro but taking costs for the LNT freight vehicles into account a deficit of 244 million Euro occurs. However significant cost reductions can be achieved in the future. If the net-wide noise reducing effects of low-noise vehicles are also considered the way of reducing the emissions of freight wagons is highly effective in every respect.
