The Cadic Corporation has established a mass production facility to produce near net shape stainless steel exhaust manifolds using Cadic's patented Convert Mold Process. The Cadic process described in the paper converts ordinary mass-produced organic bonded sand molds into high precision ceramic molds by immersing them in a proprietary binder. Once treated the molds are assembled automatically and processed at elevated temperatures in preparation for pouring. The process allows the production of thin wall steel casting to be cast into high temperatures mold in a process to investment casting technology. The 'Thin-walled cast-steel mass-production system' can be viewed as a investment casting process using organic molds. However, while cast-iron engineers extensive experience with mass production, they normally have no experience with steel, and investment casting engineers have no knowledge of organic molds. In addition, there is a large gap between the fields of organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry, and the development reported above falls into this gap. Although sterolithography technology provides an effective means of design, there is currently no mass-production technology for steel that enables the implementation of this design. Furthermore, welding process involves different types of alloys, making it difficult to achieve the reliable strength unique to metals and the resultant parts are sensitive to corrosion and stress cracking. Cadic Corporation has begun construction of a production facility in Japan. This process in conjunction with raw material recycling, provide engineers with a potent tool for designing and producing stainless and other alloy steels that exhibit excellent heat resistance and rigidity, thus enabling them to cope with the increasingly stringent fuel-economy and environmental controls being imposed on the automotive and transportation industry.
