In the context of automotive design, a permanent objective is to reduce both costs and design time. This paper therefor deals with the sizing of elements of an automotive powertrain and particulary focuses on the clutch system. A global structure of the powertrain is given and several approaches of clutch modeling are discussed. The inversion methodology, based on bicausality, is applied and simulations are performed. Finally, this methodology is used to size the one part of the powertrain. The first stage consists of modeling components of a powertrain. This paper particularly focuses on the clutch system by introducing and discussing several of its models. Subsequently, the inversion method is applied to the proposed models. Finally, these models are used as a basis for the analysis of all possible sizing as part of an inverse approach, inverse simulation is performed, and results are discussed.
