The paper presents a mathematical model intended to be used for describing some of the complex activities involved in a ship terminal container. Ship arrival process and the related loading/unloading process are modelled as a multiserver queuing system with multiple servers, under the usual assumption that ship arrivals and services occur independently with known mean interarrival time and service time. A number of statistical descriptors of the queue efficiency are introduced, which can be easily determined from normal port operating records. In order to be able to use the model for simulation and prediction purposes, a statistical method derived from the Bootstrap procedure is used for the realistic generation of pertinent probability distributions on the basis of short length normal operating data. Some preliminary simulation results support the possible use of the proposed approach in sea port container terminal applications.
