A 10 kW-level PEMFC was integrated into a prototype fuel cell / battery hybrid powered vehicle as an auxiliary power system.The direct hydrogen fuel cell system is equipped with two 5 kW fuel cell stacks, an air supply system, two humidifiers, a cooling system, a water management system, water separators, an automatic control unit, and a power conditioner. The integration of the fuel cell system covers three phases. The goal of phase 1 was to define the overall system, study components, and integrate all components into the 10 kW power system in order to gain basic knowledge about fuel cells in transportation systems. This paper describes as a result of phase 1 the design and integration as well as automatic control schemes and operation results of the fuel cell system.
