This paper outlines the heritage and the technical architecture of next generation Telematics systems and investigates potential applications. Then, looking at Telematics from the repair and maintenance perspective, explores how this new technology changes the way existing services operated. From this the authors identify the need for common open standards solutions to share information between application service providers. The authors then briefly discuss the main research and development activity in this area and its importance to successful Telematics deployment. Of particular interest in wireles technology is the Bluetooth standard. The systems promises to reshape the way we look at computing environments. Small spontaneous communities of devices will be capable of interacting to bring the user the services on the devices he wishes. In the vehicle this means the Telematics terminal, passenger PDAs and other proximity enabled consumer devices will be capable of sharing information and processing burden between them. This loosely coupled, micro-distributed platform should be considered the long term target delivery platform for Telematics services.
