A Real Time Kinematic (RTK)-DGPS based guidance system was developed that moves an implement perpendicular to the driving direction. The system was initially designed to locate potato ridges exactly above planted potatoes. The system consists of a path planning module, a RTK-DGPS positioning system to measure the actual position of the implement, a software module on a task controller that determines the position of the implement relative to it's planned path and an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to realise a required correction by means of a side shift device. The system is compatible with the ISO 11783 standard for serial communications between tractors and implements. Field tests with a potato planter and a rotary ridger showed that the electronics and the software worked correctly. The guidance system was evaluated using the RTK-DGPS receiver as a reference signal. The performance of the guidance system is determined by the difference between the planned path and the realised path. Four criteria were used to express this difference (guidance error): the maximum error (0.041 m), the mean error (0.012 m), the standard deviation of the error (0.014 m and the 95 % bandwidth, i.e. the band containing 95 % of the errors (0.027 m)).
