In 1997, German long-distance rail traffic lost passengers to the air-traffic. Simultaneously, the cost of the railway tracks increased. The reason for this critical development is the expensive railway tracks: 95% of the total amount of capital is needed for the tracks, and only 5% for the trains. Motorways have got a relationship of 70%/30% and air-traffic 25%/75%. It is necessary, and possible, to decrease the cost of new high-speed railway lines dramatically, otherwise high-speed trains will die out. In any case, the German magnetic levitation train 'Transrapid' will lose the race because of its extremely expensive track - three times higher than a normal high speed railway which is too expensive anyway.
