In recent years, the number of communication satellites in low and medium altitude orbits has increased sharply. In order to ensure the stability of space communication services, it is important to develop in-orbit maintenance robots which inspect, repair and assemble communication satellites. A prototype range finder with a small and lightweight measurement head which can be mounted on the tip of diagnostic arms of in-orbit maintenance robots was tested. By using this range finder, the number of output images (512 dot x 240 dot) with resolution in the depth direction of about 0.5 mm can be obtained for the measurement area of 100 mm x 100 mm x 50 mm, so it is possible to measure correctly three-dimensional shapes with high density data. It is, however, necessary to measure repeatedly from several viewpoints if objects are large or complicated in shape. The sensing strategy in such cases must be taken into account in future studies.
