The interconnecting of electrical and electronic components in an automotive System requires a wiring harness. The design of such a product evolves as more components and functionality are added. As the wiring harness becomes more complex, there are manufacturing and reliability problems, as well as demands on resources. These problems are exemplified in the Intelligent Vehicle which is necessitating a complete rethink of the wiring architecture and technology if it is to get away from a car full of cables. This paper highlights some of the hardware issues of wiring and interconnecting which underpins wiring architectur - and the telematic technologies for 'intelligent' systems. Some experimental results are presented concerning reliability issues, the use of novel materials, and 42V systems.
