The paper describes the design and testing activities for the development and application of the 2.0-l-5-cylinders turbocharged gasoline engine in the new Lancia Thesis that will be commercially available at the end of 2001. Starting from the engine previously used into Fiat Coupe and Lancia K, HW evolution was proven necessary in order to fulfill new product and emission specification. Commercial department asked for 'smooth driving pleasure', so a new performance setup was defined matching a low r.p.m. optimised turbocharger and adopting Bosch ME 7 torque based engine management system with a gear torque dependent function. Euro IV emission limit was met via a completely redesigned after treatment system (close coupled plus underfloor catalyst) and sophisticated cold start strategies for optimising both the raw than the tail pipe emissions. A pre-cat canning was designed to meet the exhaust emission targets under consideration of package and exhaust conversion demands. A helical port design shows the best flow distribution and was shown. A detailed description of the fluid dynamic design of the precat inflow is presented, as well as the packaging studies and the calibration activities. Finally, vehicle performance and fuel consumption are shown. To avoid a common problem of turbocharged cars - a hard acceleration during the first and second shift due to the high torque level and short ratios - a new functionality of Bosch ME7 management system was adopted: The torque of the engine is controlled in function of gearbox ratios limiting the wheel torque to the maximum coefficient of friction wheel-road.
