Specification of a cell for automotive applications is justifiabie in view of the thermal factors. Such a specification must however take into account the entire operational range from -40 deg C to 105 deg C. The corresponding response times or the clear point temperatures must be included in the specification. The influence of the atmospheric humidity can be regarded as a less critical parameter for the polarizer in the upper temperature range. Cell failures with a corresponding fault behaviour have not been reported to BMW, even from typically humid countries. Humidity and the maximum surface temperature reach their extreme values at different times. The influence of thermal loading is determined by the location in which the vehicle is used. Since the time spent by the vehicle in use represents a fraction of the vehicle lifespan, the parking behaviour of the vehicle user must be taken into consideration. The vehicle manufacturer has, as yet, no influence upon such behaviour.
