Many applications of soft magnetic powder material in low-power electric motors have been described so far. In most cases these motors are being manufactured in large quantities for the automotive industry. With the development of transverse flux machines Voith Turbo has taken a totally different approach. The entire magnetic circuit is fundamentally different from all conventional designs. The windings extend in circumferential directions and are ring windings. This makes them easy to cool, a winding overhang is obviously avoided. An immediate consequence is that the number of slots or teeth in the stator equals the number of poles of the rotor so that pole pitch is very small and the number of poles is high. This leads to short core lengths in the magnetic back iron, whereas the permanent magnet excitation in the rotor permits comparatively wide air gaps. Due to these features the transverse flux machine is well suited for the use of powder material taking into account the rather low permeability compared to steel sheet. The basic design of a transverse flux machine is explained and the main elements for which powder technology is used are shown. The demands made on the new material are specified. Furthermore a comparison to transformer sheet shall give an idea of advantages and disadvantages of the new material. Another aspect is the calculation and experimental quantification of losses as well as thew growth laws, which are of particular importance with these materials.
