Both civil and military aviation is interested in efficient heavy-duty brakes performed as multi-disc systems of a high reliability in critical situations. The braking load in aeroplanes may reach 37 MW often at over 1000 deg C. The used braking system developed by the Russian-American Rubiks Company is characterized by a specific breaking load 598 kJ/kg (under standard conditions) or 977 kJ/kg during broken take-off, a brake sink load 1174 kJ/kg or 1916 kJ/kg, respectively, and an average disc temperature 850 deg C to 1150 deg C or 1300 deg C to 1800 deg C, respectively. As frictional construction materials for the brake shoes, a polymer composite FPM, a metal-ceramic powder sinter FSPM and a carbon composite VKFM were taken into consideration. The polymer matrix composite can be used only when the surface friction temperature do not exceed 400 deg C. The sintered metal-ceramic powders FMK-11, FMK-79 and MKV-50A are applicable up to the surface friction temperature 1200 deg C when paired with cast iron or steels. The friction coefficients of the sinters are 0.24 to 0.4, the wear rate does not exceed 6.6 micrometer to 15.0 micrometer per one braking. The carbon-based composites can be used up to the friction surface temperature 1500 deg C. The Karbeniks-4000 composite has a dynamic friction coefficient below 0.2 at temperatures below 200 deg C. The coefficient increases with increasing temperature and load (to 0.8 at 1100 deg C and 0.58 MPa). Another (unidentified) carbon-based composites showed a decreasing friction coefficient with increasing friction surface temperature. Braking and wear characteristics of the frictional materials were used for designing the heavy-duty braking systems for the aircraft industry, especially for construction of Il96T/M and Tu204 aeroplanes.
