Shipboard Power Systems (SPS) as used by the U. S. Navy exhibit some similarities with utility isolated power systems in that they represent finite inertia systems and need to match total load with available generation. An AC radial shipboard power system has been modeled in the Alternative Transients Program (ATP) to use as a test system during the development of failure identification and reconfiguration methods. This modeling of the SPS will be presented in this paper. The shipboard power system is designed as ungrounded delta system to achieve system survivability in the event of a single line to ground fault. Another design feature to ensure survivability and reliability of the system is protection. The modeling of the Navy SPS protective devices will also be discussed as they pertain to SPS survivability and reliability. Short circuit fault scenarios were performed to study protective device coordination and system survivability.
