Engineering of control systems for ship propulsions is getting more and more complex. It has to consider the interaction between single devices of the propulsion (e.g. engine, clutch, reversing gear, trolling gear, controllable pitch propeller) as well as different control interfaces (mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic or electric). Additional features like overload control and load sharing for engines, PTOs and auto pilot systems have to be implemented. Remote control systems must be designed for different numbers of control stations with different procedures for station transfer. Counting all these variations, control systems for ship propulsions have to cover much more than 100 different types of applications. Modern control systems consist of microprocessor-based hardware. To realize the variability in functions a special software has to be developed. In this paper, a new approach for a modular control system for ship propulsions is presented. It is based on modular, intelligent hardware devices able to communicate with each other via an electrical bus system. With these modular devices, it is possible to design a cost-optimal hardware to control the different types of applications.
