This paper describes the concept definition, the design and the serial introduction of a new electronic control unit (ECU) for fuel injection systems with magnetic valves for engines with up to twenty cylinders. The ECUs described above when combined with appropriate configurations of sensors, actuators and wiring harnesses constitute the electric/electronic part of state of the art magnetic valve controlled injection systems. They are in serial production now since 1997 in gensets, locomotives and ships and have proven to be well suited for these applications. The ECUs are a good choice particularly for engine manufacturers with small or medium production numbers who do not have electronic development facilities of their own but for the short term want to equip the engines they are currently producing or developing with such injection systems. Regarding compliance with recent emission regulations, the ECUs meet all requirements concerning application in conjunction with modern magnetic valve controlled injection systems. Besides, they are ideally suited for future advanced systems being based on still higher injection pressures and for systems using two magnetic valves per cylinder and performing multiple injection.
