Modern high speed trains like the ICE3 are propelled by inverter-fed asynchronous drives with a conventional gear system. An alternative solution might be a permanent magnet synchronous drive, directly coupled to the wheel-set by a flexible coupling. It is shown that a permanent magnet synchronous direct drive traction motor with surface mounted magnets can reduce the drive losses by about 16 % compared to the conventional drive concept. The value of energy consumption is based on the new high speed line from Frankfurt/Main to Cologne and evaluated for the ICE 3. The design of the 500 kW motor is presented as well as the flux pattern for different operation points. The method of the loss calculation is explained, being based on two-dimensional magnetic field analysis and additional loss models. The energy saving potential will be shown.
