The MTU Series 4000 engine for rail applications was first introduced to market in 1997. Since then over 140 engines have been sold. The reasons for this success are the optimized power and consumption values included by customer-oriented engineering. In most cases, MTU supplies the complete three-phase engine generator set, this being proof of the high degree of system competence of MTU with regard to diesel-electric drives. In 2000, the success story of MTU Series 4000 was crowned by the order from ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) for 70 three-phase genset-drives to power their Rh 2016 diesel electric locomotives. The challenge related to these genset-drives was not so much to reach the rated power output of 2000 kW, but to meet the special requirements such as easy and fast installation, engine surface temperature of less than 180 deg C or exhaust and combustion-air ducting components, fuel consumption of 195 g/kWh at rated power, low exhaust emissions and good cold-start capability (-25 deg C) including no white smoke emission during idle operation. On the basis of the 16 V 4000 R40 MTU developed a new 4000 Rail Standard engine with optimized combustion and specially designed turbocharging system including new charge-air and insulated exhaust pipes. The customer requirements, the design of the engine and the technical solutions are discussed in this paper.
