In recent years, several new challenges have confronted manufacturers of medium speed diesel engines, including stricter environmental requirements intended to reduce CO2 emissions and NO(x) regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). At a time of globalized commerce and intensifying worldwide competition, users are also demanding higher mechanical performance, better reliability, easier operatability and maintenance, and reduced costs over engine life cycles. To keep up with ever-evolving technologies and market needs, the 22HLX, 28HLX and 34HLX, three innovative medium speed diesel engines that cover an output range of 1390 kW to 9990 kW have been developed by Niigata. This paper describes their features, development process, operation results, and results of disassembly checks. Performance targets for these new engines are: - high output mechanism using a small cylinder with a power rate of 24.5 Pa m/s; - low rotational speed and strokes long enough to ensure sufficient time for combustion to attain high efficiency and fuel flexibility to accommodate use of low-quality fuels; - increased heat efficiency and allowable peak pressure up to 20 MPa during combustion; - world-class thermal efficiency and compliance with IMO regulations by employing a semi-miller cycle and an optimally-tuned high-performance radial turbocharger; - reduction of number of parts. For such high output engines mono-block structure piston was first commercialized.
