What are the day-to-day realities for ship owners who transport oils and fats when it comes to issues such as previous cargoes, the condition, cleaning and inspection of cargo tanks and the risks of contamination? The report emphasizes to several of them to find out. The vegetable oil trade relies on ship owners who, at other times, may be carrying chemicals in the same vessels. The marriage of the two trades works only by means of a system of self-imposed trade regulation. FOSFA - whose purpose is to facilitate trade - has over 15 years developed trade practices in the form of ship qualifications, operational procedures and certificates of compliance as well as its lists of Acceptable Previous and Banned Immediate Previous Cargoes. These practices have become contract terms, adopted by charterers and owners alike. The trade is further protected from the risks of contamination by the fact that the chemical industry itself demands stringent shipping standards, meaning owners engaged in both trades generally have to operate to the highest standards.
