The use of safety belts in motorcars has become daily practice. Together with modern air bags, the safety belt has become an indispensable component for passenger safety. We hardly ever think of the ageing processes the safety belts made of high-tenacity polyester fibres are subjected to and how environmental influences might influence the life-saving strength of the belts. The study concentrate particularly on the exposure of the belts to UV-radiation and reaches the conclusion that soot-dyed spun yarns are superior to white and subsequently piece-dyed polyester yarn belts. Of course, what is generally found to be spun-dyed yarn's strongest point; i.e. its uniform colour, is at the same time a weak point. Spun-dyed black yarn is available in black and no other colour. That is why it is so uniform, and that is what is so attractive about the product. This uniformity, especially over a long period, is never reached by the piece-dyeing process. Besides all kinds of parameter, applied during the production of yarn, like process temperatures, relaxation tensions, shrinkage etc, there are also some other factors having an influence on the colour and colour depth of piece dyed yarn. Based on results of the experiments, we can only conclude that spun-dyed black yarn is still the best choice for applications in seat belts. It is clear that the aspect of the uniform colour, for both warp and weft material is one of its biggest advantages. The colour stability is more than OK. As the colour is already present in the yarn neither spin finish nor dyestuff can create colour problems. Process ability therefore is simpler for spun-dyed black and the development of spin finishes meeting environmental legislation are less complicated. Abrasion aspects as tested in the Flory test have shown that, due to the moderate production conditions, still enough spin finish is present for the yarn to score well in this test. For piece-dyed material a proper finishing of the belt is a necessity.
