Surprisingly, passengers in a closed vehicle would be exposed to greater quantities of polluted air than people outside. The reason is this: gases are blown into the passenger cabin with the help of the fan. By nature, gases have the tendency of spreading equally in the interior cabin. The induction of fresh air in this situation has the same effect as 'cleansing by dilution', i.e. the same effect as if trying to water down ink until it is vanished; it will take a long time. A new technology that has found its way into most European upmarket cars is based on an Air Quality Sensor. When detecting high levels of pollution, this sensor sends a signal to the climate control to close the fresh air inlet door, which keeps harmful gases out. The multitude of different climate systems on the market and the unpredictability of interface changes exposes an Air Quality Sensor subsystem to the problem of providing a flexible yet easy to integrate interface. The stand-alone design of such a system with a micro-controlled interface provides an advanced solution.
