Alternatives process to chromating surface treatment have been tested on an industrial scale pilot plant. (ANOMAG and fluorotitanate). A process optimization has been successfully achieved: large size casting can be treated in steady process conditions. Based on the accelerated corrosion tests and the results achieved so far, the anodizing ANOMAG can be considered an interesting process giving good corrosion behaviour and good painting adhesion . Full scale components are under evaluation in for-life driving cycle on real car and trucks: these kind of test are considered a must to be performed in order to better evaluate to treatment behavior in field conditions. Further developments are requested to reduce the process cost: the capital costs, the chemicals adopted in the process and the layer thickness optimization can be considered the key issue to work on.
