Boeing and NASA are investigating the compatibility of composite materials with liquid and gaseous oxygen (LOX and GOX). The objective is to determine if these advanced lightweight materials can be used to fabricate LOX propellant tanks for launch vehicles. In this paper, relevant background on Boeing development of composite materials for liquid hydrogen tanks is discussed, material qualification standards for liquid oxygen service are reviewed, and hazards analyses on composite LOX tank designs are presented in which various ignition mechanisms are considered. Finally, the results of a series of tests, standard and specialized, conducted with composite materials to simulate likely potential ignition mechanisms in the presence of LOX and GOX, at ambient and elevated temperature and pressure conditions, are presented. The standard tests have included flammability, autoignition, and mechanical impact. Specialized tests have included modified mechanical impact, electrostatic discharge, puncture, adhesive fracture, and friction. The LOX tests have been conducted at ambient and elevated pressures (100 and 400 psi). The GOX tests have been conducted at ambient temperature and pressure and at elevated conditions (100 psi, 300 degree F). Finally, small bottles (18-in.-dia) have been filled with LOX and GOX and subjected to simulated launch vibration environments at ambient and elevated conditions.
